As long as I’m on a Murnau kick, this is my second favorite of his, behind Nosferatu and ahead of The Last Laugh. Like the latter, this one is historically notable separate from just being a good film, here because of it was one of the first to have a synchronized score and sound effects. But it’s also full of romantic, heartfelt performances, striking cinematography, and some solid comedy involving a headless statue and a drunk pig. (Also, hard not to have a little bit of a crush on Janet Gaynor.)
(If you have a public library card, it may be available on Kanopy, and it’s also on YouTube, among other places.)
