
I’ve been catching up on movies from the past few years that I hadn’t quite gotten around to watching, which included Robert Eggers’s 2024 Nosferatu remake. I’m a fan of Eggers, but this one mostly just made me want to rewatch Murnau’s original, which is probably my favorite non-comedy from the silent era. And as much as the material fits Eggers’s sensibilities, I just love the whole dreamlike atmosphere that Murnau conjures out of the silent images. I mean:






And that's not even getting into the ones that a still frame can't really do justice to (Orlok rising up out of the coffin in the ship's hold, the empty ship gliding silently into the harbor, etc.). What a masterpiece.
