I’ve had the Avalanches’ sample-built dance-groove classic Since I Left You (2000) in my music library for a couple of decades now, but had missed that these guys put out two subsequent albums much later, 2016’s Wildflower and 2020’s We Will Always Love You. Wildflower didn’t entirely land for me, at least on first listen, but We Will Always Love You is terrific—it has the same warmly analog sample-driven sound as Since I Left You, but the use of actual singers (in contrast to Since I Left You’s looped-sample vocals, which are treated more as another instrument to drop into the mix than as singing per se) gives it a more straightforward pop vibe. And it has a boatload of standout guest artists, including Rivers Cuomo, Perry Farrell, Johnny Marr, Wayne Coyne, and Leon Bridges.
