I have a certain fascination with stories about people subsumed within indifferent or outright hostile bureaucracies (Brazil, The Lives of Others, The Trial, etc.), so this new arrival on the Criterion Channel—set in the Soviet Union during the Great Purge, in which a note written in blood by a political prisoner makes its way into the hands of an idealistic and naive young lawyer—was right up my alley.
